Open Payments is a national disclosure program that was established in 2009 to promote a financially transparent healthcare system. Pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers must report any payments or transfers of value to certain healthcare providers and Open Payments makes that data available to the public.
For over 10 years, Open Payments operated without a distinct, consistent identity or logo. My agency was asked to develop one as the program becomes more and more public-facing and in need of easy recognition. Open Payments wanted something that conveyed transparency and integrity that was both memorable and distinct to be used on all materials it produces in the future. It also requested a nod to the law that birthed the program—The Sunshine Act.
The result was a logo that blended an “O” shape with a sun rising over the healthcare system and a look and feel that references the governing agency (CMS) with dominant blues for trustworthiness and colorful accents. A playful yet professional set of icons and illustrations all add up for a brand that is friendly, and approachable yet carries the institutional gravitas of a public health agency.
