“You were once a friend and father,

then my world was shattered.”

A pair of postcards advertising a production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera. The audience for this would be members or season ticket holders of a repertory theater. The challenge of this project is that I was unable to use any production photography or existing logos/branding.

I created my own typographic lockup and used abstract photography of paper, relying on shape, texture, light, and shadow to capture the atmosphere and theme of the musical. The two postcard designs share the same reverse which contains safe areas for shipping in the US.

Lights, Camera, Paper!

I used paper cut into different shapes and photographed the paper pieces under studio lighting. The result was a pool of abstract imagery—light and shadow—that created shapes and textures that could be layered and manipulated digitally to evoke themes, symbols, and emotions present in the musical.
